Introduction

HELLO WORLD!

My name is Brittany Fredrick and I am a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada. People always ask me if I was born and raised here and I proudly say no. I was born and raised in Melbourne, Florida but moved to Las Vegas to continue my education. I have lived in Sin City for two years now with my puggle, Cali Lynn.

Athletic Training is a career that found me and I have always had a passion for. My little sister has TAR Syndrome and has undergone 35 orthopedic reconstructive surgeries. (She is 23 years old) So for my entire upbringing, I have been involeved in the physical therapy session with her. For myself, I was the typical all around athlete, I loved all sports. Anything I could play, I was there. When I got hurt in high school, I learned about athletic training and saw my personal life and career path come together. My education into the practice grew, so did my passion and understanding of how I could make a positive impact towards those individuals and athletes that might otherwise here the phrases, "you can't do that," "you no longer can perform your duties, we have to let you go," "you're weird," or worst of all, "no." In May of 2016 completed my Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training at the University of South Florida (USF). GO BULLS! At USF I spent most of my clinical time working within the high school setting but gained experience with Division I and II colligate athletes as well. Coming out of undergrad, I knew that I wanted to clinically work with adolescents, individuals with physical or mental disabilities, or military athletes.

In August of 2016, I accepted a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. I began my Graduate Assistantship working in a secondary school setting, but then was afforded the opportunity to work with the ARMY ROTC program and jumped at it. This was the first time the ARMY ROTC program had ever had an ATC and so I created a baseline clinical network in which I oversaw the cadet-led physical fitness training and provided modifications and variations to help improve the battalion’s physical fitness scores. In addition, provided a new "clinical hour" setting for assessments, rehabiliton, and treatment sessions. In August of 2017, I transferred to the Universtiy of St. Augustine for Health Sciences and am currently studying full time towards my Masters of Science with a focus in Athletic Training.

Today, I do not currently work within a clinical setting but do work full time. My favorite location is always the beach. I love both coasts (east and west) as well. I love to sit on the beach, watch the sunrise/sunset and just know that each day is a constant blessing. One characteristic about myself that keeps me going is my passion. I know that I have been placed here to not see athletic training as the cookbook method that I feel so many practitioners fall into. I see the standard and like to think outside of it. I love to break the mold and create new ones for each person. Giving that person a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. I hope to gain an increase in sense of this passion from this course. I hope to learn new forms of communication towards the difference of women in life. As women, we are strong and have a voice, but being able to better listen and understand where someone physically, mentally, and emotionally within there life can help all practitioners gain that one more little insider knowledge into potentially changing someone's life forever. I can't wait to see where this journey takes me!

LETS GO!

  2. Hi Brittany! Yes, your passion is palpable! And such a gift of words you have been given! It appears that life has provided you a unique opportunity to see first hand the process of our healthcare model relative your sister's experience with TAR. I imagine that you have seen both the positive and the negative aspects at play. That in itself can be very empowering.

It sounds like you are working on some fabulous programs and will do great things in your field! I'm looking forward to learning with and from you during this course!

  5. Brittany,

GO BULLS! I also graduated from USF back in December of 2014. I am from the Tampa Bay area and I'm definitely beginning to miss it's charm. I am happy to read that your dreams are driven by your passion. I believe once a misfortune hits so close to home, it opens up your eyes about the difference you could make in a person's world. Even for one person- a person such as your little sister. I think what we do for a living can make a world's difference in a number of lives, and this is exactly what I live for. To keep pushing the limits in others and myself. I think we will do great things. Keep up the hard work!

  6. Hi Brittany, as a fellow AT I agree that "cookie cutter" approaches to therapy/rehabilitation are very limiting. I always found a way to individualize my sessions to each patient and their needs/goals. It's great to see so many AT's in this course. I look forward to learning from you this fall!

    Pete

  7. Hi Brittany, it's nice to have you in the course. It's wonderful that you have been there for your sister throughout the years. It truly makes us stop and appreciate what we have and focus on the positive things in life. I agree with your peers that your passion comes through in your writing. I also like that you appreciate the standard, but you are willing to think outside the box and try new approaches with your clients. I hope you enjoy the course and learn new ways to think about how you would help your clients.
